Homemade Patriotic Star Dog Treats: Red, White & Drool-Worthy
Let’s be real.. your dog doesn’t care about fireworks, flags, or festive party punch. But you know what they do care about? Treats. Especially ones that look like stars, smell like a snack, and taste like freedom (okay, they taste like peanut butter, but still).
These Homemade Patriotic Star Dog Treats are fun to make, easy to bake, and pretty darn cute. Plus, they’ve got a red, white, and blue swirl icing that’ll make your pup the most stylish snack-snatcher on the block.
Looking for the exact products I used to make these? Here you go…
Why You’ll Love These Red White & Blue Star Cookies (Almost) as Much as Your Dog Will:
Homemade and healthy – No weird junk or mystery ingredients.. homemade with real ingredients YOU can be proud of.
Super easy – If you can stir a spoon, you can make these.
Star-shaped & swirly cute – Hello, photo op! Yes, we are being all extra with these dog cookies but hey.. they deserve it!
Pup-approved flavor – They’ll sit, stay, roll over, and maybe even do your taxes for one.
A little note from the baker: I mayyyy have slightly overbaked the batch you see in the pictures (oops!), but don’t worry—the recipe cook time below has been updated for soft, perfect treats. Your dog will never know… unless they’re also a food blogger.

What’s in these Star Spangled Puppy Treats?
These star snacks use simple, dog-safe ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen:
Oat flour or whole wheat flour (for structure)
Unsweetened applesauce (for moisture and flavor)
Peanut butter (because obviously)
Chicken broth (for extra flavor)
The Icing on the…Cookie
The red, white, and blue swirl icing? Totally optional but completely fun. It’s made with:
Cornstarch
A tiny splash of water
Peanut butter
Honey
Dog friendly / dog safe food coloring gel
Swirl ‘em together for that firecracker effect and boom—festive AF (fur-friendly, that is).
How to Make Star Shaped Dog Treats:
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Call your dog into the kitchen. They know what’s up.
Mix the flour, peanut butter, applesauce, and chicken broth until a dough forms.
Roll it out between 1/4 – 1/2 inch and cut into star shapes with a cookie cutter. No star cutter? Use any shape—your dog won’t judge.
Bake for 15-17 minutes, then cool completely.
While they cool, mix your icing ingredients together in a shallow bowl. Dab and swirl your red and blue colors in with a toothpick, chopstick or small spoon.
Holding your cookies firmly, dip straight down into the swirls, pull your cookies straight up and move them to a plate, baking sheet or cooling rack while the icing sets.
Once the icing is hard, snap a few pics, and hand one.. or five.. over to your (very patient) pup.
Tips for Success:
Make sure your peanut butter is xylitol-free (that stuff is dangerous for dogs).
Don’t overbake.. they’re better soft! (Looking at you, past-me…)
Store in an airtight container for up to a week in the fridge or freeze them for later snack attacks.
I like using a stainless chopstick to do my swirling .. I am too uncoordinated to be playing with toothpicks
Gloves are not a bad idea if you are a messy icing-er like I am ..food coloring can sometimes stain your fingers.
Make It Yours!
Wanna mix things up? Try adding:
Mashed banana instead of applesauce
Carob chips (dog-safe!) for a chocolate-y vibe
A sprinkle of cinnamon (just a little!) for a cozy flavor
Let’s Talk Dog-Safe Food Coloring
Want that red, white, and blue swirl without sketchy ingredients? Stick with dog-safe food coloring—gel or paste versions work best for bright colors and less mess. You can find pup-safe options easily online or on Amazon. A few great picks include:
Chefmaster Natural Liqua-Gel
Watkins Natural Food Coloring
Color Garden Plant-Based Colors
If you can’t find dog-specific gels or pastes, no worries! Just mix liquid natural food coloring with a bit of cornstarch to thicken it into a paste before swirling it into your icing mix—less bleeding and way easier to work with.
Want to go the all-natural route? Try:
Beetroot powder for red/pink
Blueberry juice or spirulina for blue
Plain Greek yogurt for white
Turmeric for yellow (in moderation—it’s strong!)
Bright, festive, and tail-waggin’ safe—that’s what we like to see on a treat!
